Most computer systems are designed by designers and programmed by programmers. This is a sensible arrangement, but it can also prevent the system from reaching its true potential. The programmer’s interpretation of the designer’s specifications can vary from what the designer had in mind. And an important feedback loop that would allow the programmer to make improvements to the design may be blocked.

Each new generation of computer software works at a higher level that is more abstract, or further away from machine code. These advances facilitate the blending of Designer and Programmer roles.
